Character is underscored by the eye, ear carriage, and upright tail. Open, trusting, friendly, <em><strong>brave and intelligent<\/strong><\/em>. Ever alert, not aggressive, yet fearless.<br>\u00a0<br><strong>Head:<\/strong>  Well balanced; no obvious difference in length between skull and foreface; free of wrinkles.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Skull region:<\/strong><br><strong>Skull:<\/strong> Long and flat; not too broad between the ears, narrowing slightly towards the eyes.<br><strong>Stop:<\/strong> Slight.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Facial region:<\/strong><br><strong>Nose: <\/strong>black<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Foreface:\u00a0<\/strong>Well filled under the eyes; neither dish-faced nor down-faced.<br>It falls away cleanly beneath the eyes, with fine chiselling to avoid any coarse, wedge-like or flat impression.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lips:<\/strong> Tight<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jaws\/teeth:<\/strong> Deep, powerful, muscular muzzle; strength of foreface is highly desirable, but overdeveloped jaws giving a round or bulging cheek are not. Teeth strong. Scissor bite preferred; a level bite acceptable. Overshot or undershot undesirable.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Expression of the face: <\/strong>Clean and free of fullness; cheekiness not desired. <br><br><strong>Eyes:\u00a0<\/strong>SDark, relatively small, not prominent; a bold, intelligent, terrier expression. Light or protruding eyes undesirable.<br><br><strong>Ears:<\/strong>\u00a0Small V-shaped, carried to the side, in proportion to size. The break is just above the skull line. Fully drop ears or very high set ears are undesirable.<br><br><strong>Bite (summary):<\/strong>\u00a0Strong teeth and jaws. Scissor bite; level bite acceptable; over- or undershot not permitted.<br>\u00a0<br><strong>Neck:<\/strong> Clean and muscular; of moderate length and thickness, widening into the shoulders.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Body:<\/strong><br><strong>Back:<\/strong> Short, strong and level, showing no looseness.<br><strong>Loin:<\/strong> Muscular. In a short-coupled, well-ribbed dog there is little space between ribs and hip; a long-coupled dog may show some looseness here.<br><br><strong>Chest: <\/strong>Deep (about to elbow) rather than broad; ribs well sprung<br>\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tail:<\/strong> KFormerly commonly docked.<br>Docked: Set high, carried gaily; strong and of good substance.<br>Undocked: Set high, carried gaily; strong and of good substance.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Limbs:<\/strong><br><strong><em>Forequarters<\/em><\/strong><br><em>Shoulder: <\/em>Long, well laid back, oblique. <br><em>Shoulder blades:<\/em> Flat <br><em>Elbows:<\/em> Perpendicular to the body; moving freely clear of the sides.<br><em>Forearm:<\/em> Forelegs perfectly straight with good bone.<br><em>Front feet<\/em>: Small, round, compact; good depth and thick pads; well cushioned; toes moderately arched; neither turning in nor out.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Hindquarters<\/em><\/strong><br><em>Thigh: <\/em>Long and powerful.<br><em>Stifle:<\/em> Well bent; neither turning in nor out.<br><em>Second thigh:<\/em> Muscular.<br><em>Hocks: <\/em>Well let down; parallel; from behind, parallel to each other.<br><em>Hind feet: <\/em>Small, round, compact; good depth and pads; well cushioned; toes moderately arched; neither in nor out.<br><br><strong>Gait\/movement:\u00a0<\/strong> Forelimbs reaching straight forward; in front, free and parallel to the sides. From the front, the forelegs continue the straight line of the forehand, the feet spaced like the elbows. Drive comes from the hindquarters.<br>\u00a0<br><strong>Coat:<\/strong> Hard, dense, wiry; not so long as to appear shaggy; lies close and flat. Topcoat hard and wire-like; undercoat shorter and softer. The hardest coat may twist or be slightly wavy. Curly or soft coat is highly undesirable.<br><br><strong>Colour:<\/strong> Saddle black or grizzle, including the nape and upper tail. All other parts tan. Ears often darker; darker shading may appear on neck and skull sides.
